Rise in car crime without keys

Four cars have been stolen in East Keswick and Bardsey and others entered in recent weeks in a spike in car crime without keys.

It’s not commonly understood that criminals can stand on a drive and can link to electronic car keys secure in a house. Cars then be started and driven off and the owner can vbe completely unaaware until the following morning.

Some car models such as Range Rovers and Fiestas are quickly stripped and sold for their spare parts which are in short supply. Doorbell footage has revealed hooded figures active around 10pm to 11pm in the village on the nights in question.

What can you do to prevent being a victim? Keep all car keys (and especially don’t forget spares) at a location in your home furthest from your drive, ideally in a Faraday pouch or a tin box. If you have a Fiesta or Range Rover consider a steering wheel lock too.

Please be vigilant for strangers late at night and report any suspicious activity to the Police.
