Pump house planning application revealed

Plans to convert a derelict former pumping station on the edge of the village have now been published.

The old pumping station lies between the village southern boundary and Gateon Lane/the triangle junction. Technically in Bardsey parish it is within sight of many homes in East Keswick and some villagers have objected.

Suspicions of an impending planning application were aroused when the access road to the pumping station received an extra layer of hardcore and the entrance from Wike Lane was widened. The developer cites the fact that this is a ‘brownfield site’, a description given to sites which previously have had industrial buildings making re-use as residential easier top apply for than ‘greenfield’ or virgin sites. Some objectors take issue with that, pointing out that the site has been derelict for decades and become a haven for wildlife in the middle of a huge field rather than the usual image of a brownfield site.
