Snow and snowploughs
1 Mar 18
The village had its first covering of snow for a few years yesterday as temperatures plunged to -6. The Met Office had issued an Amber – be prepared warning for the county.
Three years ago the Parish Council signed an agreement with a local contractor to snowplough the minor roads in the village in the event of heavy snow and pays them an annual retainer to turn out when there is snow, so where was the snowplough?
‘It wasn’t deep enough to plough’ Bardsey Tree Services told us on Wednesday, and that was probably why Leeds Highways hadn’t sent snowploughs round the main roads either. However, the Parish Council has asked them to look at the situation again urgently Thursday morning
Firstbus maintained the X99 through the village Wednesday, normally the first asset to vanish in bad weather. Drivers coped with care though Bardsey Bank Top was a challenge for non four wheeled drive vehicles. Leeds Highways can be expected to grit the bus route and extra bins of grit have been placed strategically round the village which the Parish Council pays to top up if depleted.
The forecast for the rest of the week is occasional snow showers, sometimes heavy staying bitterly cold but dry with the risk of light snow showers at the weekend
