Composting application abandoned
Controversial plans to install a composting facility at New Laithe Farm, Harewood have been withdrawn. East Keswick Parish Council had vigorously opposed the plan on several grounds, including the risk of foul odours and the increase in freight traffic on the A659. Harewood Parish Council, Gateways School, Leeds ward councillors and concerned individual residents were also objectors and a Facebook page was created by some of them.
The application had proposed a seven day a week composting facility handling up to fifty thousand tonnes of biodegradable waste. Eight trucks a day would have visited the site from 6am on weekday mornings. The decision to withdraw the application against such objections will be greeted with delight by many.
