Popular Village Policeman dies

PC Tony Sweeney, who was a popular community police officer in the village several years ago, has died at the age of 58. He was driving near Harewood when he felt unwell and pulled to the side of the road. It is thought he suffered a heart attack.

PC Sweeney was an ‘old school’ policeman. He once stopped some youths on the Blacksmith Field footpath connecting East Keswick to Bardsey as he could ‘smell’ drugs. The small amount on them could have just earned them a ticking off but he felt they should be put in a van and taken to Chapeltown Police Station and their parents ‘inconvenienced’ to go collect them.

As a beat bobby in inner city Lincoln Green he was attributed with vastly reducing the number of burglaries in the area by being the eyes and ears of the community.
