If you live in East Keswick and your son or daughter is a student then you need to know about the Lady Elizabeth Hastings Trust. Your son or daughter could be eligible for a grant, which is not means tested and requires just a simple form to be completed.

Lady Elizabeth Hastings was born in 1682, the eldest surviving daughter of the 7th Earl of Huntingdon. At the age of 23 she inherited a fortune from the estate of her grandfather, Sir John Lewis of Ledston Hall. Lady Betty adopted a lifestyle of deep Christianity and enlightened philanthropy. She saw education as a key to the future.

In 1738 she contracted breast cancer and underwent surgery without anaesthetics. Considering her future she set up a Trust to help young people in four specific parishes which includes East Keswick. For the Trust to become effective, she had to survive for a year. She lived for a year and a week following the Trust being established in December 1738 and it has helped children of our village ever since.
