East Keswick is to have a defibrillator for public use in emergencies. A defibrillator is a device which can deliver an electric shock to the heart when someone is having a cardiac arrest and are often signed as AED which means Automated External Defibrillator. Around sixty thousand out of hospital cardiac arrests occur every year and AEDs are widely viewed to be life savers since very minute without cardiopulmanary resuscitation or defibrillation is considered to reduce survival chances by 10%

250 people a day die from sudden cardiac arrest. A defibrillator is the only way to restart a heart in cardiac arrest. Less than 5% of victims survive but if defibrillation is used within minutes then survival chances are boosted to 70%

Most people's experience of defibrillation would be limited to dramatic scenes in TV programmes such as 'Casualty' where a medical team shouts 'stand clear' and a patient is jolted back to life, however the defibrillator for the village is designed that anyone can use it. The machine is portable. A 999 call to the ambulance service will enable you to release it. The machine gives spoken instructions. It will not work on a healthy heart that doesnt need the treatment.

The debrillator is an initiative between Yorkshire Ambulance Service and East Keswick Parish Council. It will be housed in a prominent position at the centre of the village. It is part of a national project to install AEDs in thousands of rural locations. many private and public organisations are also installing them and you will notice them more regularly in supermarkets, main line rail stations and public buildings.

Further details of the location will be posted on this site as soon as they are available as well as details of a free training course, though it should be pointed out that any untrained person can use an AED. The device will not adminsiter a shock if one is not needed.
