Horsforth based Irwins Ltd, the building firm which bought the Travellers Rest pub on Harewood Avenue has gone into administration with the loss of 56 jobs.

The sale of the Travellers Rest was controversial. East Keswick Parish Council objected to the change of use to offices. At the time, a number of prospective buyers were thought to be interested in keeping the inn as a public house and/or restaurant. Their interest was to no avail. Some claimed that the sellers particularly wanted the inn not to continue as licensed premises. The Travellers Rest was the oldest pub in the village and had spectacular views over the Wharfe Valley but its location was also a handicap since it was outside the village with few neighbouring houses.

It is thought the building has not had a great deal of work undertaken since its sale and villagers will watch with interest whether any buyer approaches KPMG with aspirations of reviving the site as an innor restaurant.
